2021 Calendar – February

Utah is a politically conservative state. One of its major institutions, Brigham Young University (my alma matter) is consistently selected as the “most sober university” in the country. So when creatives break outside of the norm, it’s really unexpected!

Such is the case with Utah’s “Spiral Jetty” (https://www.diaart.org/visit/visit-our-locations-sites/robert-smithson-spiral-jetty). Built by Robert Smithson, the Spiral Jetty is a man-made feature built in an out-of-way location most people would never otherwise visit. And then… Covid hit. We all spent weekends looking for interesting things to do out-of-doors.

Photographing the Jetty is challenging. There’s the cliche shot-from-the-overlooking-hill-above approach (boring), but capturing the Jetty is difficult otherwise. As we walked around the Jetty, with some very strange cloud action above, this image jumped out at me. It is one of the few times I’ve purposefully worked to capture shadow to evoke an emotion.
