2021 Calendar – January

Zion National Park encompasses a wide swath of varying topographies in Southern Utah. The most visited spots are in two main canyons. This image was made in the heart of 2020’s COVID pandemic. I left dirt early in order to catch the sunrise over Zion from the “Zion Overlook,” which is just a few miles east of the Springdale park entrance. Unlike, well, every period from the establishment of Zion National Park, the Zion Overlook was almost empty. I shared this stunning sunrise socially distanced from one couple hailing from Seattle.

I love Zion–its towering peaks, shaded canyons, and staggering views inspire millions each year. The depth of its canyons are a testament that adversity (or erosion) can carve out beauty, when endured patiently.
